Affordable Housing

Housing affordability is an issue affecting many lower-income Australians, with many people  relying on a government pension as their only source of income.

The difference between the pension being adequate or inadequate often depends on the individual’s housing costs. There are currently over 10,000 people on assisted accommodation waiting lists across Queensland, and the demand is increasing.

To meet this significant community need, Y-Care (South East Queensland) Inc. has purchased over 2700 square metres of land in Nerang and is working with the State Department of Housing to build a 55 - bed Affordable Housing facility which will provide quality, affordable accommodation to people in necessitous circumstances.

Works are well underway, and the site is expected to be available for tenancy in mid-May 2009.

The objectives of the Mentoring program are

  • Assist young people to receive an education by helping to provide them with the desire to stay in school and therefore decrease the chances of disengaging from education, becoming welfare-dependant or becoming involved in a crime-related lifestyle.
  • Provide a timely intevention program to reduce school absentism and remain engaged in education.
  • Reconnect young people with adult members of the community and provide then with positive role models.
  • Increase the reach of the program by involving more schools.
  • Assist these disadvantaged and /or marginalised young people to develop vocational skills, outside interests and social skills.
  • To build stronger, more cohesive communities, particularly in areas of disadvantage.

Programs

Tenants for these affordable housing villages will be selected from Department of Housing waiting lists, and will be those of highest-need for these services.

One of the distinct advantages Y-Care (South-East Queensland) Inc. can provide to this model is the range of other YMCA services and programs that can be added in order to further reduce the distress and suffering seen as a result of poverty and misfortune.

Programs that will be made available include:

  • Counseling
  • Health and recreation services
  • Education services
  • Low-cost, pre-packaged meals

The YMCA services will help instill a true community feel and environment within the villages.
