Food for the Homeless

Y-Care has committed to alleviate hunger for homeless and disadvantaged young people in South East Queensland by way of preparation and distribution of nutritious pre-packaged meals.

At the time of the 2001 census, it was estimated that 24,569 people were homeless in Queensland, of which 6,381 (26%) were under the age of 18 years. Many of these young people do not receive regular and/or nutritious food. Currently over 14,000 meals a year are prepared in the kitchen at the YMCA War Memorial - Camp Warrawee.  The meals are cooked in a “Combi” oven, sealed and snap frozen for distribution.

Y-Care (South-East Queensland) Inc. will establish an operational arm to directly deliver the meals to homeless youth. Meals are also currently delivered to Y-Care (South East Queensland) Inc., Youth Emergency Services and Northgate Lodge for direct distribution to homeless and disadvantaged youth in Brisbane who would otherwise go hungry.

It is planned that over time other meal preparation facilities within other YMCA establishments in Brisbane and surrounding areas will be established to expand production capabilities. It is envisaged that in the near future, meals will then be made available to needy youth in the Redlands, Logan and Gold Coast areas.
