The YMCA Vocational School was funded in 2012 for a trade skills centre, to be built within the site at Kingston. As part of this, the Vocational School offers Certificate II in Automotive for the students enrolled at the YMCA school and those enrolled in school within the local catchment area. As part of the program, students have the opportunity to complete a Certificate II in Automotive over a 12-month period. While enrolled in the program, students have access to our state of the art automotive training workshop. Students in the past have had the opportunity to work on a restoration project of a 1974 Corvette Stingray. As part of the training, we like to incorporate a project to give our training a real edge and greater variety for the students.
This qualification covers the skills and knowledge required to perform a limited range of tasks related to familiarisation and inspection of mechanical and electrical components and systems of cars, heavy vehicles, outdoor power equipment, bicycles, marine craft and motorcycles. This qualification also covers the skills and knowledge required to perform minor maintenance and repair of an automotive vehicle body.
The Certificate II in Automotive Vocational preparation prepares prospective employees to undertake work in the broader automotive industry. Job roles related to this qualification include: trades assistant, vehicle service assistant, automotive service assistant, trainee serviceperson, automotive trainee.
To be awarded this qualification, competency must be demonstrated in 12 units of competency, consisting of 7 core units, plus 5 elective units. The list of units of competency have been selected as being an appropriate combination that can provide valid, reliable, fair and flexible assessment and is deemed suitable for industry required outcomes.
